About Us
Our Communities of Northwest Stokes (OCNS) Foundation, a local 501(c)3 nonprofit, was launched a decade ago to support a rural community navigating change after the closing of its century old local school.
Driven by community
Our open and non-hierarchical organization applies experimental and evolving approaches to community projects. The community meets monthly, chooses consensus direction, and formulates plans based on that consensus. We are flexible, nimble, and can seize the moment.
This open approach is central to all that we do including, but not limited to:
Annual funding of grants in the community that encourage creativity, education, and innovation in the area
Planning and executing annual festivals and celebrations (e.g., FarmFest, Francisco Auto Show, and Picnic in the Park) that honor creativity and innovation
Organizing/coordinating classes and learning events
Ensuring a well-informed citizenry by hosting candidate forums in advance of local primary elections
Coordinating back-to-school events to ensure all children have necessary supplies
